The OK43 Roundup is Here!

Van Shea

In his own words
Van Shea Iven talks about Oklahoma high school sports

Like many Oklahomans I have always loved and known the importance of sports, especially high school sports.  I grew up in Pond Creek, Oklahoma and had the opportunity to play football, basketball, baseball and run track.  My senior year we won State in football and played in the State tournament in basketball.

During college at Oklahoma State, I expanded my interest in sports with an internship at KFOR-TV, which had the two best sportscasters in the state, Bob Barry and Bob Barry Jr.   Bob Jr. is now one of my best friends and Bob Sr. is like my second dad.  My internship turned into a job as a NewsChannel 4 sportscaster for 17 years.

After encouragement from high school coaches and athletic directors, I left KFOR to start my own show, the Oklahoma High School Sports Express in January 2006.  I do about 40 weekly shows each school year.  So far this school year, the Express has featured student/athletes from over 230 schools competing in 20 different sports.   While football and basketball are featured prominently on the Express, every OSSAA State championship event is a big deal on my show.

It's great to see some of the former high school athletes that I have featured on my show go on to bigger venues.  Blake Griffin, the 2007 Express Male Athlete of the Year, is now a star basketball player at OU.   Brett Anderson from Stillwater High School was a second round draft pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks and is one of the top pitchers in the minor leagues.  Edmond Memorial High swimmer Samantha Woodward, who set a national record during the taping of our show, has a great chance to represent the USA in the 2008 Olympics.

I now receive over 300 emails each week from family members and athletes thanking me for the coverage that most of these athletes wouldn't get otherwise.  Many schools throw watch parties when they know that their team is going to be on the show.  I know that the student/athletes featured on the Oklahoma High School Express will be tomorrow's leaders.  That's the reason I plan on doing this show for as long as there are high school athletes.

The Oklahoma High School Sports Express can be seen Sunday nights on KAUT at 7:30 with an encore on Saturday mornings at 11:00.  Go to OK43.com and look under OK43 Sports for links to the OHSSE website, YouTube page and Van Shea Iven.

Steak

Steak, It’s what’s for Grilling.

The Memorial Day weekend is coming up fast and with it the unofficial start of summer.  All across Oklahoma, grills are being cleaned and prepped for marinated morsels cooked over an open flame.  There will always be a debate over charcoal briquettes or gas, but whichever you choose, a thick steak sprawled across the grill is a mouth-watering sight.

To help you get grilling, Oklahoma’s NewsChannel 4 at 9 on OK43 anchors Cherokee Ballard and Ernie Paulson join with Big Board Sports master Bob Barry Jr. to bring you a surefire steak recipe for each day of the holiday weekend.

Cherokee Ballard shares her simple but tantalizing taste twist that will make any sizzling steak scintillating.  Cherokee says, “Start with plain old salt and pepper (not too much of either) rubbed on both sides of your sirloin. Next, add a little five pepper spice blend (any brand will do).  Then add my secret ingredient, a sprinkling of cinnamon across the steak.  Grill it up the way you like it and you’re ready to eat. You’ll love it!”

Ernie’s & Bob Jr’s steak recipes are below.  Do you have a favorite recipe for the perfect grilled steak?  Email your recipe to recipes@OK43.com or mail your recipe to OK43.com Steaks c/o KAUT 444 East Britton road, Oklahoma City, OK  73114.  Keep checking OK43.com for some great local steak recipes!

Face of 43Face of 43 Talent Search

There is a new face in town, actually two of them. They are the Faces of OK43.  In March 2008, KAUT-TV launched a statewide search for two television spokespeople.  The goal was to find a combination of raw talent and personality that would exemplify the identity of OK43 – “An Oklahoma Original.”  The competition was open to both men & women 18 to 34 years old.  Over 200 people auditioned during the search held at Quail Springs Mall.

“Outside of news and weather, there are very few local TV personalities,” said Jim Boyer, KFOR-TV/KAUT-TV President and General Manager.  “We are in the business of local broadcasting, and having a spokesperson team for KAUT-TV will give us one more way to serve our viewers.”

“This is an unprecedented opportunity for two young people to showcase their talents,” added Wes Milbourn, Executive VP and Station Manager.  “It is certainly the chance of a lifetime and it’s local, right here in Oklahoma City.”

The two chosen as the “Faces of 43” will make guest appearances at various local events from The Oklahoma Gazette Dachshund Dash at the State Fairgrounds to OK43 Sneak Peek Movies for Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Kung Fu Panda and more.

At press time, the winners of the “Faces of 43” talent search had not been announced; so keep watching OK43 to find out who will be Oklahoma’s newest celebrities.

FlavThe Flavor of MyNetwork TV

MyNetwork TV recently unveiled its very first sitcom Under One Roof, starring Flavor Flav.  Flav plays Calvester Hill, an ex-convict that moves in with his wealthy, conservative brother, Walter (Kelly Perine).  Calvester subsequently turns the family’s life upside down, parading his old prison cronies through the house, teaching his nephew Walter Jr. to be a gangsta rapper, and butting heads with Walter’s snooty wife, Ashley.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Flavor Flav,” Greg Meidel, president of MyNetwork TV said. “Under One Roof is a classic fish-out-of-water story, and it will be a hilarious addition to the our lineup.”

Flav remarked, “I am real excited about my new sitcom Under one Roof.  I want to thank MyNetwork TV for believing in your boy, because we are about to blow this out of the water. I am about to take MyNetwork TV and make it MY network.”

Flavor Flav formed the rap group “Public Enemy” in the ‘80s. Flav has also appeared on the VH-1 programs Flavor of Love, Surreal Life and Strange Love.

Going Digital on OK43.1

All across the country local TV stations like KAUT OK43 are transitioning to digital television. What does this mean to you? Starting February 18, 2009, if you depend on an antenna for your television signal, you might not be able to watch OK43 anymore unless you have a digital TV or a digital converter box. In fact, if you have a digital TV or a digital converter box and a good old “UHF Loop” antenna, you could be watching OK43 digital on the 43.1 channel right now.
If you don't want to invest in a new digital television, your regular analog set won't necessarily go dark on February 18, 2009.  You can essentially turn your analog TV of today into a TV that receives digital signals by simply adding a converter box. There is a government program that is now taking requests for coupons.  Each $40 coupon will go towards the purchase of a “certified” digital converter box.  Each household may request up to two coupons by going to http://www.dtv2009.gov or by calling 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009).

For households currently receiving TV signals via cable or a satellite system, those providers will probably take care of converting the digital signals so there will be no lapse in service.  Be sure to check with your cable or satellite provider.  Don’t let your TV go dark, make the transition to digital today!
